A Little Tour through Southern New Hampshire

I have shown you some of my favorite places up here in NH before, like Burdick's, the farmstand (here, here, and here), and an antique shop (that has since moved, although we just went to Peterborough earlier this week and there are several other fabulous places to shop). Today I thought I would show you a handful of the beautiful old homes I love driving and walking by every time we are up here. I loved living here as a girl and dream of someday owning a home up here.

This house has always been one of my favorites:

I am not sure if I have the right number of greats  (I might be short one), but this house was built by my great, great, great, great, great grandfather and has been passed down each generation.

Those are just a handful of ones I love. There are plenty others, including my all-time favorite that I couldn't take a photo of the other day, but maybe will get one at some point this summer.

Here are a few of the other pretty buildings up here. This is the church my great-grandparents attended.

And this is the church Jon and I got married in, and so did one of my sisters, cousins, my parents and my grandparents!

And here is the Town Hall where we had our wedding reception:

This is the original Meeting House.

And this is the Meeting House in the next town over.

I don't know about you, but I just love old architecture! The quality, beauty and attention to detail just amazes me.

If you like viewing New England I recommend reading this post by Joan who writes one of my favorite blogs, For the Love of a House. I have been in her home and it is absolutely stunning. You have to head on over and see her kitchen! Anyway, she wrote a post back in May that gave her readers a little tour of Grafton, VT and I know you will enjoy it (and her whole blog!)

I hope you all have a fabulous Thursday!

  1. These are all so beautiful, thanks for sharing! I would love to one day own a house like the ones you showed us, just gorgeous in every way. Funny how every state has their own style of house, you will never see something like that here in Texas.

  2. What town in New Hampshire are these old houses? We live in a historic house in a historic village in Rhode Island and would love to visit this town when we travel to New Hampshire! It looks beautiful and your photographs are gorgeous too!

  9. Great photos! There is something about old new england charm, that you just don't see anywhere else, and you captured it beautifully!I grew up and still live in southern NH, and we just bought our first house, and 1800's white famhouse, that I hope to make as pretty as the ones you took pictures of :) Glad you are enjoying your stay :) ~Bre

  10. Wonderful post! Many of the homes look like they are from the Exeter area but I don't think they are. Of course the old New England houses tend to have a lot of similarities. Hope you are enjoying your summer in New Hampshire!

  11. Wow! I'm so in love with these houses. I live in a small town in Texas and we have a few beautiful homes like these. I love to drive along the streets and look at them. One thing that surprised me though, was the lack of landscaping. Here in Texas, landscaping is huge. Have to admit though, the houses are lovely enough to stand alone.

  12. Jen,

No WONDER you live in Colonial Williamsburg - it is like your old life in NH without the SNOW!

I found this post informative and quic delightful - what amazing houses -and by far my fav is your heritage home, the first one - WOW!

And those charming old historic Protestant churches?

Interesting how the really old homes have kept their exact architecture and haven't built on many porches.............is it due to restrictions so they may continue as Registered Historic Homes? I bet so because they scream for porches, don't they? And not having them makes them so Colonial True!

Loved this post and heading over now to see the suggested blog reading, thank you!

    Have a wonderful weekend.

  14. Beautiful pics - I spend a lot of time perusing Joans blog 'For the Love of a House' and that's how I found your blog. I would love to move to New Hampshire and these photos provide a nice setting for me to dream about. I currently live in Virginia Beach - so it will be a very different environment, but Williamsburg is a little more like New England... Well sort of :)

  20. What amazing pictures, Jennifer! Peterborough is one of my favorite small towns in NH, and I love the shops up there too. If you get a chance while you're visiting, you should stop by Twin Elm Farm right on 101. The shop is fantastic and the owner is a sweetheart! It's one of my favorite places to shop up there in addition to Bowerbird. So bummed that Red Chair moved to NY :( Hope you enjoy your visit back home!
