Our $5 Yard Sale Table and Chairs

For four years I have been on the hunt for a little table and chairs. I really wanted a set when I was pregnant with Lillie but couldn't find one I liked that wasn't terribly expensive. Then I forgot about it for a while and then would remember and start looking on Craiglist and in consignment shops and then when nothing turned up would forget again for a while and so it went. Well, one day while we were up in NH we were headed on one of the narrow, winding roads from my parents house to my grandfather's and I excitedly yelled and turned the car around because I thought I spotted a set at a yard sale. Sure enough, there was a little set and the lady said it was $5. I'll be honest I didn't think there was any chance we were going to be able to get it back to VA with us seeing how our car was jam packed on the ride up there, and we already had several a few new things to bring back, but I couldn't pass up $5. (Actually, I didn't have any cash on me so technically my mom was the one that actually paid the $5 - haha!) It took quite a bit of packing and repacking but we got them in. Now, I have to say the table was not in great shape, but it was sturdy. Even painted, I wouldn't say it's my favorite thing ever, and the chairs are a bit boxy for my taste, but it is an improvement and the girls LOVE it. They've been eating breakfast and lunch there every day and have spent hours and hours doing their little projects at it.

It took quite a while to get all the lovely stickers off the top - that was fun! =)

This wasn't originally where I planned on putting it but it's where it fit best.

I hope you have a wonderful day! I'll be back tomorrow.

  6. Awwwwww! I totally love this story! It has everything good in it, sweet little $5.00 find, the whole figuring out how to get it in the car... (boy have i been there.!) and then seeing it look totally adorable in your darlin house. Plus the way the girls just love it, and eat there and do projects... now that's my kind of sittin on the front porch story!

  10. I love the table and chairs. My son and daughter spent many happy hours at their table, although their table was not as lovely. They had the heavy duty Playskool set. There is just something that delights kids having furniture that is a perfect fit. The table and chairs blend wonderfully with your decor. I can still see my son sitting at his table, eating a snack while watching Thomas the Tank or Rupert the Bear or working on his legos. My son will be nineteen tomorrow and my daughter is fifteen. I look at their baby photos and I am always in awe of the people they have become. Enjoy your girls. They are absolutely gorgeous!

  11. This is just too cute. It looks perfect in its little spot. I am looking for something like this for my little 9 month granddaughter. Where ever did you find the little sock monkey with blonde hair (just precious)? Love following your blog. Have a great week. Sheila pshagler@att.net

  19. Until our next to last move across country, we had my husband's table and chairs from when he was little. We gave it to our daughter, but I have no idea if she still has it. It was very sweet, but very old! lol

  22. It's adorable. Have you considered making seat cushions (or even chair covers) for the chairs? You can also do a table cloth for the table. It would make it more feminine (less boxy) and you can add your own Dear Lillie touch. Although if you do this, please do a tutorial, since I've been contemplating a similar project for our IKEA table and chair set!

  24. Now just imagine the table and chairs being red and two little boys are sitting at it.... 3 and 6 years old. That is the memory you brought back to life for me! Cherish these times as I know you will. As they say, it all goes by so fast!

  25. It's adorable. I had an adult-sized similar set a few years ago that we used in our homeschool room. Had to sell it when we moved, but I would love to have it back to paint now -- it was actually real wood! I think I bought it for about $25 from a relative.

Love how you've made it blend in with your decor...

  26. That is too cute. Excellent job transforming them. By the way, I have found that stickers actually come off quite easily if you peel them with a fingernail or pallette knife and then use a few squirts of hand sanitizer. Yes, hand sanitizer...they just roll right off! Just a tip for future reference.
