January Family Room

January is always a bit of a strange month when it comes to decorating. Once all of the Christmas decor is put away it always feels a little bit barren but it's a little too soon to add any spring or summer touches. I left our cozy knit and fur pillows and throws as well as our pom pom wreath for now seeing how they are nice additions in this winter weather, and then we added in some more cheerful touches to our mantel using some fresh seeded eucalyptus bouquets and some tulips from Trader Joe's to help make it feel a little less gloomy even though it's still quite cold and dreary outside.

You can see more photos and get a source list for the kitchen in this post here.

  2. Did you know...
That if you put a little slit in a tulip-- right in the green part before the color starts-- it will keep the tulip from opening up! A florist friend told me that this summer. I always prefer them when they are closed!

  3. Did you whitewash your brick on the fireplace or just lightly paint

  5. Beautiful! I'm curious as to how you feel about your faux ceiling beams. Do you like them or wish they were gone? Have you considered painting them or removing them altogether to open up the space and make it feel bigger?

    1. Thank you! If we were designing a space we wouldn't put beams in unless the ceilings were a good bit higher. However, these beams were in here when we bought the house and although they make the ceiling feel lower which I don't like (and many of our guests are over 6' tall so the ceiling feels low to begin with), I do like the cozy feeling they add to the room and we have no plans of removing them or painting them at this point.

  6. I love your beautiful place and family room. In fact, I was browsing through various sites over that past weeks looking for family room set up similar to mine (with the dinning room leading to the family room) and here I found yours. Love the colors!

  7. You room really spoke to me! It just seems like a cozy winter spot. I've discovered your site from Cedar Hill Farmhouse and I'm so glad I did. I love your style and I especially appreciate your source list - just my price point! i'll be back.

  8. What a warm and inviting space. Your before and after's are simply amazing. I agree so much about decorating after Christmas! I have gone the same direction, with lots of texture, tones of white and cream on brown and gobs of candles. I even made the pom pom wreath that was supposed to be done for Christmas, but didn't make it. It's a nice, new addition. Thank you for sharing your talents!

  10. I love that your doors are all painted black. I was wondering if both sides on the bedroom doors are black especially in your girls room?

    1. Thanks! They are everywhere except the girls' room, because that was the first room we painted and we hadn't decided on black doors yet. Eventually we will go back and paint theirs black too so all of the doors in the house match.

  12. I went and got the paint Horizon and it looks nothing like the monitor color. Do you like the color better in person better than on-screen?

    1. Hi! It looks very similar on my monitor and in real life, but everyone's screen will show colors differently.

  13. How did you change the color of the brick? Did you whitewash it? If so, please share your method - would love to know how you got that gorgeous look!

  14. Beautiful, inspiring home! I have been looking for the best place to find variations of eucalyptus for my mantle: seeded, silver dollar, or the standard. Any recommendations? I'm finding that the artificial stems I've found haven't been cutting it for me and many of the dried stems are died deeper colors which isn't my favorite.
    Thanks! xoxo
