My Parent's Guest Bedroom

I am so excited to show you the guest bedroom at my parent's new house! I am in love with how it turned out. My mom did a fabulous job in here. She did pretty much everything in here herself. The only things I helped with were the rug and pillows. Although this technically is the guest bedroom, Lillie and Lola seem to have laid claim to it and I am pretty sure they think it is their bedroom.  (The beds do normally have guard rails on them to keep the girls from falling out. However, I took them down when I took these photos and set them out in the hall seeing how this is how the guest room looks most of the time - just not when we are visiting.)

I also am completely in LOVE with the dresser. My mom hunted and hunted for the perfect piece to go between the beds and just recently found this dresser up in Wilton, NH at White Home Collection. I love everything about it - especially the color. I cannot wait to get back home and paint something either in our new dining room or our new master bedroom in this color! Well, I don't know what this exact color is called, but I am going to do my best to find a similar paint color that I can use.

I have always loved these beds. One belonged to Lillie and Lola's great-great-grandmother, Dorothy, and the other one belonged to her sister, their great-great-great-aunt. I slept in one of them my entire childhood and Dana slept in the other one (and eventually as we got older they both ended up in my room). I know some furniture can get pretty banged up over the years but these have held up beautifully and are still gorgeous pieces!

The wall color is Benjamin Moore's Pebble Beach. If you think it looks a little familiar it is because this was the color we used in our guest bedroom at our last house and also the same color Jamie and Josh used in their guest bedroom. I think it's safe to say our family is a big fan of Pebble Beach - haha! It is one of those pretty colors that looks gray in some lighting and pale blue in others. The draperies are from Ikea and the rods are from Bed, Bath and Beyond. The pieces above the bed are from Pier 1.

My mom had everything together but was just waiting for the final touch. She'd been looking for a rug to finish the room up and give it some warmth. She watched the girls one evening last week and I took a little trip "into town" to see if I could find anything for her. As far as places to shop go, their options are very limited up here so I ended up at Target. While running through the home decor section to get to the rugs I saw these pillows:

And then these:

I liked the traditional feel of the first ones and loved the modern pop of the second ones. Plus I loved the idea of pulling out the color of the dresser in the pillow. I figured I would get them both and see which looked better and return the other ones. Well, we ended up loving both of them though so they both stayed.

After putting those in my cart I finally made it over to the rugs. At first I didn't see anything but then noticed this one. I was afraid it would be a bit too modern and busy for my mom but I knew the color would be perfect so I figured it was worth a shot. The trellis pillows and the rug ended up adding a nice little modern twist to an otherwise very traditional room. And although I love a traditional room, I think it's fun to add a bit of a pop to it either with an unexpected color or bold print of some kind.

Over in this little corner they have another dresser (this one used to be Dana's growing up) and a beautiful mirror.

I tried to get a better shot of the miror without getting myself in the picture but didn't have much luck.

The entire time I was taking close-up shots of this room Lola was snuggled up on the floor. She was quite enthralled that first day or two with the "comfy new rug".  It took a bit of convincing but eventually I was able to get some shots of the room without her in it. The first bunch I took all look like this:

However, I was finally able to get a couple close-up shots of her while she was sitting there so I can't complain. I hope everyone's week is off to a great start!

  1. Wow, be sure to tell your mother that her room is AWESOME!

But even better than the room is that pretty little princess.............they're off and gone before you even realize............and you would give almost anything to have her sitting back there on the rug. Trust me, it happens overnight.

    Hugs.

  5. So welcoming!

The guest bedroom in my grandparents' home growing up had two SUPER high twin beds. They look a lot like these; dark wood and all. I always felt like a princess crawling up in to them. I love that your girls have "their own room" there.

    1. Thanks! As I mentioned in a comment on yesterday's post and also on FB that's what happens when a two year old is helping you photograph a room. She flipped it up shortly after I started photographing the room and I didn't notice until after I got them on my computer that night. I came close to switching them all in photoshop but then decided to keep the pictures as they were. Gives a little real life quirk to them. =)

    2. The room is beautiful! Is there anyway you can tell me the name of the curtains from Ikea? I'd love to get them but I want to make sure I get the right ones. Thank you for your time!

  8. Wow, I see that interior decorating runs in the family, your mom did an amazing job, everything looks perfect. If I could do it all over again, I would go with gray colors in my home, just very classy and beautiful. Your little princess is such a doll!

  9. Is that the bedding that you used in Lillies room at your townhouse. I figured you might have given it to your mom since you are redoing there room completely different now. If not where did it come from? Are they antiques? Can't wait to see the rest of your home pictures. So get home soon!! Thanks, your neighbor Shawn in Maryland

    1. My mom has actually had that bedding for years and the coverlets don't even match - haha! And Lillie and Lola will still be using their bedding from out last house seeing how it will still go with the new color scheme. That's what's so nice about white coverlets - they pretty much go with everything and are timeless! I am looking forward to getting back to work on our new house too, but we are enjoying our visit up here as well! =)

    2. yes as they say the house and all its needs will still be there! And your being with family and getting to relax (atleast alittle, lol!! you still got kids) is more important than anything else. Life is to short!! Hope to get to maybe meet you someday! I got a grandson and a granddaughter that are both Lillie and lolas age. I don't have a blog myself yet. but love to decorate anything and everything. Doing my nephews wedding now.

  10. Your mom sure has a decorators touch....love it....and that beautiful little princess makes it even more special. I love the quilts at the ends of the bed in the last pics. I remember during their building phase you posted your parents kitchen....I have been waiting to see their entire house...I hope you show more rooms...she has great taste...like mother like daughter(s)...oh I'm sure Jason has it too. Thanks for sharing.

    1. Thanks! The quilts were there originally. In fact when I started photographing the room that morning I just did it with the quilts and not the dark gray trellis pillows. However, I ended up adding the trellis pillows in midway through, but they didn't look right with the quilts so we removed those. In the end that's how the room stayed - with the charcoal pillows and no quilts.

  11. I love it! However, I'm curious about the tree silhouettes. Are they cut from cardstock or is it wrought iron?

    1. I am not sure the material but it's definitely not cardstock. =) I would say some form of tin maybe? You might be able to look it up on Pier 1's website.

  14. Oh my it's brought back so many good memories of VA reading about your new house and looking at the pictures. Such typical beautiful VA architecture. Love your new house. And it will be just as gorgeous as your townhouse was. It's already looking amazing. Those screen porches were just wonderful when we lived there and could watch all the amazing birds and wildlife. Enjoy your new home.

    Great room.

  28. Thank you to your Mom for sharing this lovely room. Good taste runs in the family, I see. Those topiary trees over the bed from Pier 1 are something I've been eyeing whenever I shop there. I just bought 2 from their website while they are 50% off!

  30. So beautiful! I want this exact room in my own house.

  31. Very well done!! Question, how would the rug look laid out left to right (not the same direction as the two beds) and more away from the headboards? Leaving the dresser on wood which is beautiful yet still able to "land" on the rug when you exit the beds?
Kinda looks "heavy" on that end of the room per photos.

  32. Beautifully well put together! Recently obsessed with the color gray which is almost what the dresser looks like.

  35. I love it! Do you think your parents would adopt me? Seriously, I can see where your talent comes from.
I live in New Hampshire and go to the White Home several times a year, and also to their permanent store in the old house. It's a real treat. My best score was antique chandelier prisms, which I am making into necklaces.
I always eat at Gary's Harvest while I'm out there, or drive into Peterborough and grab something at the Diner.

  36. Hi Jennifer I may have commented on your blog before..I love it and you've been an inspiration to me in going the grey route...lately. I am in the process of painting my kitchen and I did it in BM Sea Haze, you might like that for your dresser. Looking forward to seeing your home transform under your design.

  40. Just lovely! I was actually on my way to Home Depot today for trim paint, to finish up our guest room. I was perusing Pinterest late last night for decorating ideas for the guest room, when I stumbled across your post. I shut off my phone - must-get-sleep - with a determination to check it out in the morning. Glad I did - now, I need to find that gray color, too! I think a (homemade) chalk paint with 3 coats of clear wax will duplicate that finish exactly. My favorite shot is the one with Lola (Hi, Princess Lola! You're adorable!), because it shows the extra layer of the quilts at the bottom of the beds - perfect touch! Tell your mom it is wonderful. Good job to you, too, kid! Of course, it's impossible to get a true color match on a computer screen, and some of the original dark stain is showing through the chalk paint on the drawers, but the color looks very close to Sherwin Williams 'Palisade' (they have a whole page of colors by paint family - this one is from the "Cool Neutrals", even though it is not blue at all. Maybe someone could pick out a shade they think is closer to it from that page.): http://www.sherwin-williams.com/homeowners/color/find-and-explore-colors/paint-colors-by-family/SW7635-palisade/
