Some Progress in Our Upstairs Hallway and Linen Closet

Good morning! I hope you are having a wonderful week. I can't believe it's February! Today I want to  share with you the progress we've made in our upstairs hallway. Although some parts of this house are quite similar to our old one, the entryway and upstairs hallway had a good bit more space than our previous home and we were exited about that.

When we moved in pretty much the entire upstairs was painted a "builder's beige". It was nice because we didn't have to worry about taking down lots of old wallpaper like our last house, but it was pretty dull looking so one of the first things we did was paint the walls white. I painted the downstairs part of the entryway as soon as we moved in and then just this past week painted the upstairs part and all of the doors. Then we had the beadboard wallpaper added below the chair rail. It's a nice inexpensive way to add a little dimension and texture to the space especially seeing how we were going with all white.

Today I am going to show two parts of the hallway the linen closet and the walkway area (here's one picture of the linen closet and then there's some more at the end of the post):

And then here is the little walkway area:

As soon as I finished painting (quite literally - as in about twenty minutes after I was convinced the paint was dry - ha!) I installed the new sconces. Then we chose this runner from our sponsor, RugsUSA. It is beautiful! The colors in it are so pretty and I love the subtle pattern. I am now trying to find a spot where I could use a bigger version of it - I love it!

I ordered the bench from Joss and Main. I honestly thought it would be more decorative because of the location, but I have been quite surprised that we actually have been sitting on it and using it quite a bit!

I am showing pretty cropped shots of this space for now because I am waiting for our new hanging light fixture to arrive as well as all my frames for our gallery wall! As soon as those arrive and I get them hung I will share much wider shots of this whole space.

The colors in this rug are so pretty!

We added a console over to this wall. I haven't styled it or played around with it but once I do I will take more photos of it. I have this painting by Deann here temporarily but have something else in mind for here that I am hoping to get hung soon!

I had taken a little break from painting and didn't stir my paint very well before I painted these doors - whoops! I need to paint another coat over them to cover up all the streaks. I knew it as soon as I finished painting them (and therefore made sure to stir it better for the rest of the doors) but forgot all about it until I was taking these pictures - haha!

The nice thing about the linen closet was that I literally was able to just transfer everything from our last one right into this one! It was almost the exact same size!

Adding Some Shelves Into The Closet

In the guest room where we keep our desk I finally got around to cleaning out and painting the closet. The girls helped me paint and then build some really basic shelves for one of the sides so I could stack some of my baskets filled with cards, ribbons and crafting supplies.

I have always loved wrapping paper and keep most of our papers in here. The majority of the wrapping paper as well as most of the baskets and other fun accessories in this closet are from HomeGoods.

I'd like to eventually do something a little more interesting in this closet like we did in the other room and possibly wallpaper it.

And here's the rest of the room:

Our Linen Closet Makeover

Now that all the main parts of the house have all been painted it's time to start tackling the closets. We won't be necessarily making them all "pretty" but we do need to clean them up and paint them.  Our linen closet is right at the top of the stairs and seeing how a few members of our family seem to like to leave the doors open we figured it would be nice to clean this one up and make it more visually appealing after we got it painted.

The first thing we did was pull out the shelves and paint the walls (Gray Owl by Benjamin Moore) and painted the shelves (Simply White by Benjamin Moore).

I originally planned on using a wallpaper I had picked out but realized the access panel might be a little tricky so I decided to just paint and use a stencil for a little more interest. Because I decided that pretty much at the last minute I just ran to the craft store and found whatever stencil I thought would work size-wise and went with it. Because it's just a linen closet and it was gong to be pretty hidden anyway with everything on the shelves I wasn't too worried about it being very perfect.

Once we got it painted and the shelves were fully dried we put the shelves back in and started organizing. We got new baskets, towels. and glass jars from Wayfair. We hid a lot of our not so pretty things in all the baskets. For instance we have several very colorful sheet sets with Disney characters that are all in one basket and lots of our other sheets are in other baskets. The more colorful towels that we don't use very often are up in one of the top baskets as well as our dehumidifier. Then we've got lots of other miscellaneous and more colorful items in the other baskets and boxes. All of the white towels and washcloths that we use every day are out and easy to grab along with toilet paper and some of the extra sheets and blankets we use on a more regular basis. The jars with clothespins are more decorative but as these doors get left open quite a bit, it's nice having something pretty to look at every time we walk by.

We added an inexpensive hook type thing to hang our mini ironing board and iron on. I used some fabric from a shower curtain to recover our ironing board. It doesn't necessarily match the rest of the space very well but it was a fun print and all I could find.

I love these bird jars so much! I think they would be fun to use at a party filled with candy.
