Tempaper in Everly's Room (Bluestone Hill)

I am so excited to share a preview of Everly's bedroom! Tempaper sent us this beautiful gold peony wallpaper that covers the upper half of the only wall with sheetrock (the rest are pretty much built-ins and windows). It is such a lovely, fresh spin on traditional floral wallpaper and adds the perfect touch to the room. Even though the rest of the room was dark and messy, the minute this one wall was done, the whole room felt brighter.

This is the view from the doorway looking in. It is hard to shoot the room right now because we are waiting for the hardwood floor to come in so we can rip up the dark blue carpet. The room was previously my uncle's library, and therefore had a very heavy, masculine feel to it. Although we both loved the dark wood built-ins and paneling and originally intended to keep the wood and brighten up the backs of the bookshelves with the temporary wallpaper so that we could someday turn it back into the library, we ended up going ahead and painting it due to our daughter's current nightmare situation. We are hoping the brightness of the room will at least keep the space itself from contributing to any scary thoughts at bedtime. (On a side note, she did tell me recently the other morning that she woke up from a scary dream and sang herself back to sleep with "when I am afraid, I will trust in you, I will trust in you, I will trust in you...in God who is my strength." So maybe we're making progress?? :)

(I don't love this wide shot but it gives a slightly better feel for the room.)

In terms of application, it was fairly easy. I started off with my mom and Jenni helping, and getting going was a little tricky both because I wasn't prepared for how sticky and slightly stretchy the material is, and because I started in a corner where the wall wasn't completely squared and I had to cut out for a door frame. However, once I got the hang of it, it went on so much easier, and I finished the second half of the wall pretty quickly. I am a little lazy about things like this, so I actually didn't work that hard to take the air bubbles out, I just pricked a tiny hole in a spot where there was gold and therefore the hole wasn't visible, and worked it out with the scraper-thing (that's what they call it on the packaging, right?) which seemed to work well. (I'm sure this is not what they recommend you do, but if you are lazy like me, it works!) The whole thing was done in an afternoon, and I am not very good at projects that require thinking ahead and common sense. (I had minor trouble with cutting out for the door because I kept doing it backwards.) That is to say, if you have a fair amount of common sense, you can probably do it quicker!

I love how the pattern is both elegant and fun - an updated classic! I think it is a very versatile design - it could be styled many different ways. I am adding lots of feminine details, like this old photo of a relative, and pink accents in the bookshelves:

I loved filling Everly's shelves with meaningful personal items. The shelf with the "E" has her baby announcement, the bunny which was the first gift her daddy got her after we found out we were pregnant, and the box next to it containing all the cards she got at the baby shower, as well as the cards people filled out with guesses about her height and weight, and name suggestions for her poor indecisive parents who still hadn't decided on a name.

Something about the way great great great aunt Getrude Lamb is leaning against the notebook with the words "I'm So Fancy" on it hits my funny bone:

The books above and below were mostly from my grandfather's library:

The middle shelf contains a basket with a tie of Uncle Bob's for Everly's future husband, because when I helped my mom divide them evenly among all the men in the family, there was an uneven number and Everly kept running off with this gold one...hopefully her future spouse doesn't have our sickly skin tone! ;) And the box next to it holds her receiving blanket and hospital bracelet.

I think the gold pattern really ties the wood and whites together. And the best part is, Everly loves it. For about the first week, every time someone came in the house, she led them to her new room (even if they had already seen it) and would say "look at this wall!" when they walked in, as if whoever it was could possibly think the disastrous other half of her room was the reveal. I still have quite a bit of painting to do on the other half of the room, and we have the whole carpet to remove and replace with hardwood, but for now, I'll just look at this half of the room!

Baby Everly's Got Some News

A few weeks ago we shared a few photos of Lillie and Lola with their cousin Evie. In those photos was a symbolic little baby carriage.

Evie is going to be a big sister! And Lillie and Lola have a new little cousin on the way! They are so excited!

Jon's sister is also due with another little girl in just a few weeks. We can't wait! That will make the 7 babies born to mine and Jon's siblings so far all girls! My older sister has two girls, we have two girls, and Jon's sister will have two girls. It will be fun to see if this new baby of Jamie and Josh's continues the trend of sisters or if a boy finally makes his entrance. Ha!

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend!

Cousins in Colonial Williamsburg

I hope you all are having a wonderful Sunday! Every year (well, I guess I should say for 2011, 2012, and 2013 and want to go back and make them for the 2009 and 2010 once I have some time) I make a book of photos for ourselves and the grandparents. I try to keep up with editing my pictures throughout the year and then at the end of the year I put the book together (I used to work on it month by month as the year progressed but now I am always behind and start working on it at the end of the year - ha!) I just finished editing some of these pictures from our visit from Lillie and Lola's little "sister-cousin", Everly and even though they were taken almost two months ago figured I would share a few of them today. It rained pretty much every single day during the week they were here visiting so we didn't get many pictures but we did try to take a few during the last afternoon they were here while we were down in Colonial Williamsburg.

Evie loved watching the horses as much as Lillie and Lola always do:

I love the way Evie's looking up at Lola in this picture:

Oh how I love and miss this cute little face.

I hope you all have a fabulous week! I'll be back with next with photos of our master bedroom makeover.

Everly's First Birthday Party

Back in March, my niece, Everly Penniman, celebrated her first birthday. My sister, Jamie, created the most beautiful party for her. She went with a "Penny Candy Store" theme. I have to say the awnings she made were incredible! They were not very easy to make though, and I am pretty sure she almost gave up on them but I am so glad she was able to pull them off because I think they absolutely made the biggest statement and loved how they turned out. Lillie and Lola loved the set-up. I wish I had recorded Lola's reaction to "the most beautiful party room ever" as she kept referring to it.

Jamie made all the decorations herself so she only had to purchase the flowers, candy and a few other things like cups, plates and straws.

And here's a shot of the birthday girl, herself taken by Jason's girlfriend, Brie:

These cute little bottles were from Michael's and the straws were from Target.

These are little baby food jars with painted tops. (I will leave out the little story that involves the purple paint spilling all over Jamie's car, my parent's mudroom and Jason's kitchen - how a little can of purple paint could legitimately spill in that many places could only make sense if you actually knew Jamie - haha)

She made some fun little games for the party including this tic-tac-toe one. She used purple chalkboard paint on just a regular square piece of wood and then with some help from Brie, painted on the lines using a white paint pen.  Then we just used regular chalk to play.

This was the only thing I helped with. (I don't love how it turned out but that was all we had available for colors and I had to do it pretty quickly - I am pretty sure little Evie didn't mind though) =)

Jamie got these cute jars at HomeGoods when she was down here visiting earlier this year.

And these jars below were from Target (and the other ones were all leftover from Jamie and Josh's wedding several years ago):

Jamie got this stand (and the buckets too) a couple of years ago at a little shop in Peterborough, NH and we've all been envious of it ever since. If she ever gets sick of it I am next in line for it. =)

Jamie repainted an old checkerboard she had in the party's colors. She took step by step photos of that and she'll do a tutorial for that soon. It turned out so cute! I think I might make one for Lillie and Lola's playroom.

She bought a bunch of these folding chairs at IKEA a couple of years ago and they came in quite handy for the party!

Brie helped Jamie with these by painting the one cent on some jars with a glue gun and then once it was dry they painted over the whole thing.

I thought this was such a fabulous idea Jamie did in the three windows that didn't have the awnings. It was so colorful and fun but also sweet and sentimental. I loved seeing all the different photos of Everly over the past year. She'll have a tutorial for that coming soon too!

Didn't Jamie do a fabulous job? Everly is one lucky little munchkin! You can see some of Everly's nursery here, her baby photos here and here and her baby shower photos here and here and Jamie's maternity photos here).

I hope you all have a fabulous week ahead!
