I hope you all have had a lovely weekend. When we first started making over this room I knew I wanted to wallpaper the upper half of the walls but I couldn't find anything that was quite right so I just quickly painted the walls a light color so at least they has something. (You can see lighter color here). I actually ended up really loving the light color (Gray Owl at 75%) so I didn't mind it being up for a while. In fact if you are looking for a light gray with a bluish undertone I would highly recommend it. It's one of my favorite colors and I would use it again in a heartbeat.
After hunting for a year and a half now I still haven't quite found what I want for wallpaper in this room. (I have for other rooms, if you look under the "Our Home" tab up top you can see we've wallpapered the girls room, the playroom and two bathrooms and also the bedroom in NH). So, this past week I decided to at least finally paint the walls a darker color to give it a little more of a bold look. I used Kendall Charcoal by Benjamin Moore which has always been one of my favorites colors. I used their Aura line in a matte finish. We used this same color in our master bedroom quite a few years ago at our last house and then in Jason's home office. And we also have painted a couple pieces of furniture with it.
Once I painted the walls I took some of our black and white images from some other rooms and used them in here to go with the dark walls. However, about an hour after I took these pictures I ended up changing things around. Although I love how they look against the dark walls I didn't really like how they looked with out furniture. It felt like the styles competed too much with each other. I played around with it some more though and got rid of all the black and white images and brought in an oil painting and a new sign and now I think I like it much better. I'll try to take some photos in the next week or so once I finish tweaking it and share them. For now though you can at least see the darker walls!

Love the darker gray in your dining room! You have enough white and wood tones to pull it off...your whole house looks great!
ReplyDeleteIt looks lovely! I enjoy seeing both the lighter and darker shades. Personally, I love the lighter shade. Soft and sumptuous

Love it!!! Reminds me of your old home!
ReplyDeleteI love this color, and if we ever move, ill definitely use it again. I think what I like about it is how crisp the white looks against it. You did a great job in this room, now it's making me want to paint another room in my home Kendall charcoal ;)
ReplyDeleteLove it and the colors!

ReplyDeleteI absolutely love your home! I read your blog all the time. I was just wondering what color hardware you put on your black doors? By the way, love your new wall color!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Michelle! We used oil rubbed bronze for the doorknobs in this room.
DeleteThis is so beautiful . I want to paint everything in this color. Simply stunning room.
ReplyDeleteI love the black and white photos in there, but what do I know? :)
ReplyDeleteDoes it have any undertone colors ?
ReplyDeleteHi! Sometimes it looks like it has a little navy to it and sometimes a little brown, but mostly it looks kind of charcoal.
DeleteThis is absolutely stunning! I need to catch up on all the pretty things you've done!

Do you know if home goods still has bench available?
ReplyDeleteEach store will have different items in stock, so theres no way of knowing--but its definitely worth a look!
DeleteI am definitely using this charcoal gray in our short sale we will (hopefully) close on. In one of the photos, it features your hallway area. What color is the coat closet/bi-fold doors? A deep brown? Or, the same color? Thanks!
ReplyDeleteHi, Donna! The doors are painted Mopboard Black by Benjamin Moore.
DeleteMy wife loves this room and asked that I build the same farmhouse table for our dining room. The table is built and now it is time to stain it. What was your process for applying the two types of stain?
ReplyDeleteHi, Rob! We just used a rag and applied the gray stain first and then as soon as we finished began applying the brown right on top of it.
DeleteI wanted to let you know that your blog was my inspiration for my own dining room! I had planned on using Kendall Charcoal as my wall color, and when I Googled that, your blog popped up. I copied your curtains and black and white photo idea. I also gave you credit in my blog here: http://amberandmattparsons.blogspot.com/
ReplyDeleteLove your chandelier! How high are your ceilings? I am trying to determine chandelier sizing. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteHi! Jenni's ceilings are 8 feet.

What brand is the chandelier? Beautiful room!
ReplyDeleteHi, Erin! Unfortunately we don't have the brand information, but if you contact Savvy (www.savvyinwilliamsburg.com) they should be able to help you out!

I,too, have painted my dining room Kendall Charcoal. I am having difficulty with an entryway paint color. What paint color did you use in the entry?
ReplyDeleteHi! Jenni's used the color Moonshine by Benjamin Moore in her entry.

Do you know approx the diminsions of your chandelier? And how tall are your ceilings? I love this look, just worried to get a chandelier too big for my space!
ReplyDeleteHi! Jenni has 8' ceilings and she thinks her chandelier is about 36" wide. Here is a link to the slightly smaller version of that chandelier which should have dimensions listed: http://bit.ly/29i3M5g

I'm so in love with your table but I'm having a hard time replicating the stain :( What type of wood is it (pine?). How many coats did you do - just one grey and one provincial? Did you use a wood conditioner first before staining? Did you distress at all? And did you put any top coat on like a polyurethane? Sorry for so many questions but I absolutely adore your table!!!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Dayna! Jenni used pine wood and just applied the gray stain first and then as soon as she finished began applying the brown right on top of it (no conditioner or distressing). Stain colors can be difficult to replicate as every piece of wood is going to take the stain slightly differently, but I would definitely recommend trying out the colors on scrap wood first until you get it the way you like it.
DeleteHope this helps!
-Jason
I absolutely love this space! I know you said the mirror is from RH but can you tell me which one it is and the size? I love it! Thank you so much!
ReplyDeleteThank you! I checked with Jenni but she honestly couldn't remember much about it (she purchased it about 10 years ago).
